Guardiola to replace Pellegrini as Manchester City manager

  • Posted on December 31, 2017 at 2:35 am

Monday, February 1, 2016

Manchester-based football club Manchester City today announced their current manager Manuel Pellegrini will remain only to this season’s end. Former FC Barcelona and current Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola is to replace the Chilean next season.

He is one of the best managers in the world, no doubt about this.

Pellegrini joined City in 2013 and under him they have won the Premier League and the League Cup. Guardiola, winner of two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup with the German giants Munich, and a two-time Champions League winner with Barcelona, has signed a three-year contract with Manchester City. Guardiola also won four La Liga titles with Barcelona, winning fourteen trophies with them in total in four years and making him their most successful manager. He has suffered just nineteen managerial defeats in 239 league matches.

Pellegrini has managed 64 victories out of 99 games in the Premier League — only José Mourinho has a better record from his first 99 Premier League matches. Manchester City are currently second in the league table and in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Pellegrini was, the announcement noted, in full support of announcing the change.

Former Manchester City player Trevor Sinclair, in remarks to BBC Radio, said “He’s the hottest manager out there. Every club would want him.” Liverpool F.C. manager Jürgen Klopp, who previously coached Munich rivals Borussia Dortmund, praised Guardiola saying “He is one of the best managers in the world, no doubt about this. […] Pep won everything in Spain, nearly everything in Germany, so I think he wants to win everything in England, that is clear.”

On December 20, Bayern Munich announced Guardiola would be replaced by former Real Madrid and Chelsea F.C. manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian has won three Champions League titles in his coaching career.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

  • Posted on December 31, 2017 at 2:30 am

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

While nearly all cover of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.

As a non-partisan news source, Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, throughout the campaign. The most recent of our interviews is Laurens, South Carolina‘s John Taylor Bowles. Mr. Bowles is running with the endorsement of the National Socialist Order of America, a Minnesota-based Neo-Nazi party created after a recent rift in the National Socialist Movement.

Nintendo Wii sales decrease in Japan

  • Posted on December 30, 2017 at 2:56 am

Friday, April 10, 2009

Nintendo’s widely popular game system the Wii was hit by a decrease in sales in Japan. Nintendo hopes to regain its sales by releasing a new version of its Wii Sports game in June. The current CEO of Nintendo said in a press conference they will not be slashing prices of their hardware. “If our products are not much different from competitors’, price cuts would generate significant fresh demand. But video games are just not that kind of product.”

As of December 31, 2008 the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales.

The Wii’s competitor the PlayStation 3 for the first time exceeded sales in 16 months in Japan for the month of March.

The Wii Sports Resort and other new games and software will show up in Japanese stores in June to renew interest in the Wii.

Debt Irs Tax Solutions

By Sean A. Kelly

A growing number of wealthy people are calling for higher taxes on the rich to help restore the fiscal health of the nation. Many have signed open petitions calling for the end of tax cuts adopted since 2001. These people are saying, ‘Tax me more’. For the majority of people, tax hike is unpopular and many are buried under mounting tax debt problems. People are turning to debt IRS tax solution providers for help.

Many of these debt IRS tax solution providers claim that they can help you save the most money while resolving your tax issues with their expertise and resources. They normally provide free consultation to determine if their services are suitable for your needs. It is important to consult with licensed IRS representative tax attorneys, enrolled agents (EA), and certified public accountants (CPA) as most IRS tax debt solutions involve direct negotiations with IRS. These professionals are familiar with all the issues and procedures and know how to navigate the IRS tax collection process.

You might be one of those who owed IRS tax debt due many reasons such as failure to file tax returns, did not know how to file self-employed returns, or underestimated taxes due from 401k withdrawals. Whatever the reasons, it is in your best interest to take action and resolve the problem quickly to avoid interest and penalty.

The IRS can only collect tax debts, plus any penalties and interest, within a 10-years time frame and after that the remaining balance on the account disappears forever. However, waiting for the 10 years to pass is not a recommended solution. The IRS can employ tax collection activities which can bring negative impact on your financial situation.

There are several options available to settle your IRS tax debt:

Offer in Compromise (OIC): a program to settle tax debt with the IRS for less than is owed via a lump sum payment or a brief installment plan. To qualify for an OIC, a taxpayer must be in a financial hardship with proof based on examination of household income, monthly IRS allowable living expenses, and the assets in the taxpayer’s name. Taxpayer must also demonstrate to the IRS an inability to repay the debt within the remaining time the IRS has to collect on the debt. The amount that the IRS will accept in a settlement depends on how accurately the OIC documentation is prepared.

Installment agreement: a monthly payment plan for the full balance of the IRS debt. This plan allows a taxpayer to spread the repayment of the tax debt over a period as long as 5 years. Individuals who owe less than $25,000 can often apply for these themselves, if they are able to pay all debts (and the interest that will be added on) in full, within five years. Once the tax debt is over $25,000, the IRS no longer offers the option of paying the debt within five years.

Partial payment installment agreement: a monthly payment plan for a portion of the tax debt if your tax debt is over $25,000.

Currently not collectible (CNC): an agreement with the IRS not to seek collection of a tax debt for a specific period of time. If the IRS grants you CNC status, they are going to file a tax lien against you. The IRS will periodically review your finances with you. If your financial situation improves, the IRS will revoke the CNC status and resume active collection efforts.

Bankruptcy: an order to discharge all or part of your IRS debts under Chapter 7 or to make payments or not, per the ruling of the bankruptcy court in Chapter 13. In order for an IRS tax debt to be discharged it needs to meet three basic rules. The tax debt has to be due for three years, the tax filing has to be filed for two years, and the tax assessment has to be in place for at least 240 days.

Most IRS tax debt process is complex and requires certain skills and expertise. It involves proper documentation and negotiation with IRS. You may consider engaging a licensed IRS representative to help you with the process. You may look for someone with years of experience in IRS collection matters, especially experienced in dealing with revenue officers, the Automated Collection Systems division, and the complex IRS process. You may explore all of your options and understand the full extent of your tax problem. By being fully informed about all IRS collection efforts, you can protect yourself as best as possible from IRS levies, liens, or wage garnishments. And most importantly, you can take action to solve your tax debt quickly.

Microsoft announces web version of Office

  • Posted on December 30, 2017 at 2:42 am

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Microsoft has announced they will launch web versions of their popular Office software in 2010. It will be included in all versions of Office 2010 when it ships next year. All Windows Live customers will also reportedly have access. Testers will be given access at the end of this year.

The service will go into direct competition with Google Docs, launched three years ago. Last week Google announced they were going to launch a new operating system, called Google Chrome OS. Like Google Docs, Microsoft Office will be compatible with Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Microsoft’s group product manager for Office stated, “We believe the web has a lot to offer in terms of connectivity. We have over a half a billion customers world-wide and what we hear from them is that they really want the power of the web without compromise. They want collaboration without compromise. And what they tell us today is that going to the web often means they sacrifice fidelity, functionality and the quality of the content they care about. We knew that if and when we were ever going to bring applications into a web environment, we needed to do the hard work first because we hold such a high bar.”

Microsoft’s business software division, which includes Office, made USD 9.3 billion in profit during the first three-quarters of its 2009 fiscal year. Analysts from The Wall Street Journal have predicted that the move “could put at risk as much as $4 billion (£2.46 billion) in revenue.”

US nationals arrested for alleged abduction of Haitian children

  • Posted on December 30, 2017 at 2:32 am

Monday, February 1, 2010

Haitian police yesterday arrested ten United States nationals, five men and five women, over the alleged abduction of 33 children. The nationals tried to cross with the children, aged between two months and twelve years, into the Dominican Republic, but were halted at the border.

The group belongs to the two-month-old New Life Children’s Refuge charity, with some members from Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian, Eastside Baptist Church in Twin Falls, Idaho, and others from Texas and Kansas. Their claimed intention was to move the quake victims to a temporary orphanage being set up in a hotel-resort in the neighbouring Dominican Republic. Police said the Americans did not have any paperwork or permissions to remove the children from the country. Haiti’s government has imposed new restrictions on adoptions due to concerns about child trafficking during the post-disaster confusion.

The detainees are being held near the capital, Port-au-Prince, and maintain their arrest was a mistake. Laura Silsby, the group’s spokeswoman, insisted on the group acting in good faith and they paid no money for the children. She defended the lack of any authority from Haitian officials, “I was going to come back here to do the paperwork,” asserting that Haitian pastor Jean Sanbil, of the Sharing Jesus Ministries, allowed them to move the children. She claimed, “[w]e had permission from the Dominican Republic government to bring the children to an orphanage that we have there.”

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive disagreed strongly with group’s actions; “[w]e did not arrest Americans, we arrested kidnappers.” Social Affairs minister, Yves Christallin, told Agence France-Presse that it was “abduction, not an adoption”. He continued, “what is important for us in Haiti is that a child needs to have authorisation from this ministry to leave the country”. He stressed, “[t]his is totally illegal, […] these people did not have that authorization.”

Kent Page, a spokesman for UNICEF in Haiti, also weighed in today saying, “[y]ou can’t just go and take a child out of a country – no matter what country you are in.”

The NCLR group planned to take around 100 children to the Dominican Republic. According to their mission statement, the Baptists‘ intent was to “find healing, hope, joy and new life in Christ” for the Roman Catholic children “as well as opportunities for adoption into a loving Christian family.” To that end they partnered with New Life Adoption Foundation to “help facilitate adoptions and provide grants to subsidize the cost of adoption for loving Christian parents who would otherwise not be able to afford to adopt.” They envisioned building an orphanage at Villa Magante on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, with facilities for the children, and lodging and amenities for “adopting parents to stay while fulfilling requirement for 60?90 day visit as well as Christian volunteers/vacationing families.”

The children have been transferred to an SOS Children’s village in Santo, to the north of the capital. The site has a medical facility run by the Dominican Red Cross. Staff reported the children were “in a very bad emotional state” and that a small baby had to be temporarily taken to the main hospital. Some children told staff they actually have parents, and a twelve year old said she and her family had believed the New Life Children’s Refuge group wanted to take her to a boarding school in the Dominican Republic. Later, three people arrived at the SOS Children’s village claiming to be relatives of five of the children. They said, “the woman who took the children to DR” told them she organised summer camps in the neighbouring country; they declared they did not intent to permanently part with their children.

Amarick Louis, Haiti’s justice secretary, told the Associated Press that a commission would decide today if the group would go before a judge. Senior Pastor Clint Henry of the Central Valley Baptist Church told reporters New Life Children’s Refuge, and the Haiti mission, are separate from the 25-year-old church. He noted that members of the church were confronted with negative feedback after the arrest of the NLCR group. His congregation prayed for the arrested members of their church during services on Sunday.

Giant camel bones found in Syria

  • Posted on December 29, 2017 at 2:56 am

Wednesday, October 11, 2006

The skeletal remains of a giant camel were discovered in a Syrian desert. The fossils are estimated to have come from a camel that died about 100,000 years ago.

The bones were unearthed at al-Hemel, Syria, about 155 miles northeast of Damascus, by an archaeological team made up of both Swiss and Syrian people.

Apparently the Palmyra region of the Syrian desert “is the first origin of the camel,” said Bassam Jammous, director general of the Antiquities and Museum Department.

A scientific name has not yet been agreed upon, but the joint Swiss-Syrian team has dubbed it the “Syrian Camel“. Jammous stated that the animal is thought to have been around 13 feet tall, twice that of an average-size modern day camel.

Some human bones were discovered nearby in 2005, while stone tools were found along with the camel bones recently.

Evidence from the fossils make it appear that they were not bred by humans, but this cannot be certain.
