Football: Werder Bremen win DFB-Pokal

German team Werder Bremen won the DFB-Pokal (Germany’s equivalent of the FA Cup) on Saturday night by beating Bayer Leverkusen 1–0. The win guaranteed Werder a place in the first Europa League and was their only piece of silverware this season. Werder has broken a streak of bad luck that was started by losing UEFA Cup to Shaktar Donetsk 2–1 after extra time. This was followed by a tenth-place finish in the Bundesliga via an “embarrassing” 5-1 defeat by champions VfL Wolfsburg.

Bremen, determined to win, dominated the game on both sides of the ball, while Leverkusen seemed lazy and “lifeless”. Leverkusen’s best chance came after 22 minutes. Patrick Helmes found himself in front of the net with only Bremen keeper Tim Weise to beat, but he spectacularly failed to score. Bremen started pouring on the chances, with several coming just before the half. Bremen keeper René Adler had to push a header from Naldo just over the bar in injury time. The game was tied on 45 minutes.

The second half started with a powerful shot from Tranquillo Barnetta that, unfortunately for Bayer, was easily saved by Wiese. Just four minutes later, the only goal of the game was scored. Mesut Özil took a shot from a rather severe angle. The shot bounced off of Manuel Friedrich‘s outstretched leg and into the net. Leverkusen tried to respond, but came up just short. Stefan Kießling seemed to have a legitimate chance after 79 minutes, but it was despatched by Sebastian Prödl. Leverkusen tried one last time to score during four minutes of injury time. They were helped when referee Dr Helmut Fleischer booked Hugo Almeida and Wiese for time-wasting. Two minutes into injury time, Kießling’s head missed a cross by inches, and it sailed past him and out of play. By the time four minutes were up, Werder players were begging the referee to end play. Finally, after almost five minutes of injury time, Fleischer blew the whistle and the celebrations began in Bremen.

The women’s Pokal final was played earlier in the day. FCR 2001 Duisburg followed up their UEFA Women’s Cup win with a 7–0 humbling of 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. Five goals were scored in the second half. It is the biggest margin of victory in the DFB Frauen Pokal’s 28-year history.

Gambia confirms exit from Glasgow-hosted Commonwealth Games

Monday, October 7, 2013

Following Gambia’s sudden withdrawal last week from the Commonwealth of Nations, the country confirmed today they have withdrawn from the Glasgow-hosted Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place next year. This leaves 70 countries and territories competing in the Games.

The country’s president Yahya Jammeh withdrew from the 54-nation Commonwealth with a statement on television Thursday saying, “The general public is hereby informed that the Government of the Gambia has left the Commonwealth of Nations with immediate effect […] [The] Government has withdrawn its membership of the British Commonwealth and decided that the Gambia will never be a member of any neo-colonial institution and will never be a party to any institution that represents an extension of colonialism.”

Yesterday, a spokesperson for the 2014 Games said, “All Commonwealth nations and territories are entitled to compete in the Commonwealth Games. Glasgow 2014 has received confirmation from the Commonwealth Games Federation of the formal withdrawal of The Gambia from the Commonwealth. It is our understanding, therefore, that The Gambia does not intend to enter a team and compete in next year’s Games.”

Being a member of the Commonwealth is a requirement for participation in the Games, and organizers could not formally withdraw Gambia from the Games until they received confirmation from the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The organizers are planning to modify the Queen’s Baton Relay to remove Gambia. The relay traditionally involves the baton travelling to all participating countries.

Having participated at every Commonwealth Games since 1970 except the boycotted 1986 Commonwealth Games, the nation has only won one medal, a bronze at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games.

Council of Australian Governments agree on reduced environmental regulation

  • Posted on March 29, 2018 at 2:18 am

Saturday, December 14, 2013

At a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments yesterday leaders of the Australian states and territories agreed to a deal with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott which would delegate more environmental decision-making powers to the states and territories about projects that might affect the environment. The “one-stop shops” policy would mean that the states would do more of the assessments for projects with the intention that eventually some states would have the full authority to make the decisions.

Two states, Queensland and New South Wales, have agreed with Abbott a policy of “assessment bilaterals”. Abbott described them as follows: “Under those assessment bilaterals the states will do all the assessment work and we hope that in the not-too-distant future we will have approvals bilaterals in place which will mean the states will not only do the assessment but will also do the approvals.” All of the states and territories signed memoranda of understanding with the federal government on the issue of environmental regulation.

Tony Abbott argued it would not harm the environment and the “same high standards of environmental approval” would be used, but decisions would be quicker. The Australian government would still hold the power of veto over projects they deem environmentally problematic.

The Business Council of Australia welcomed the move, saying the regulation changes were a “long overdue breakthrough”.

The Australian Green Party has condemned the policy. Senator Larissa Waters, environment spokeswoman for the Greens, told reporters: “These deals pave the way for Tony Abbott to abolish a 30-year-old federal safeguard for our most precious natural places and wildlife, established when Bob Hawke stepped in to save the Franklin from being dammed […] Labor governments in South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT are trashing Bob Hawke’s legacy and contradicting federal Labor’s position”.

She continued: “Tony Abbott wants to put states and territories in charge of approving environmentally destructive projects that impact our World Heritage Areas and nationally endangered species.”

Jess Abrahams from the Australian Conservation Foundation also expressed opposition to the changes: “The memoranda of understanding signed today paves the way for the undoing of 30 years of national protection for places and species of national environmental importance”.

The Council also discussed truancy by indigenous students and the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Post-mortem examination reveals Stephen Gately “died of natural causes”

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

An autopsy performed on Tuesday revealed that the late Boyzone singer Stephen Gately “had died of natural causes”.

Officials from the Spanish island of Majorca that Stephen had suffered from an accumulation of fluid on the lungs, or as it is known in scientific terms, a pulmonary edema. The 33-year-old singer was found dead on a sofa in the lounge of his apartment. He had been out of the accommodation for the night while he was partying with Andrew Cowles, who was his partner.

There was a court hearing held earlier today in Majorca. The hearing only lasted for a short time. The judge had decided that the family of Stephen Gately would be allowed to take his body back to the Republic of Ireland, the country in which Gately grew up and had lived in, by plane. After discovering Stephen’s death, the other members of Boyzone took a plane flight to Majorca, so as to comfort Andrew Cowles. They have now flown back to their homes.

Woman in Buffalo, New York accidentally sets herself on fire

  • Posted on March 29, 2018 at 2:09 am

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Buffalo, New York —A woman in Buffalo, New York in the United States is in critical condition tonight at Sisters Of Charity Hospital after she accidentally set herself on fire.

The unnamed elderly woman was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette, and the oxygen coming from her mask facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

Despite her “severe” burns as described by firefighters on radio communications, she was still able to dial the emergency line in the U.S., 911.

In the U.S. only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials in 2002. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.
