Panama-flagged ship hijacked off Somali coast by pirates

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Suspected Somali pirates have hijacked the MV Al Khaliq, a Panama-flagged ship, off the eastern coast of Africa on Thursday. International maritime officials said the ship was seized about 330 kilometers west of the Seychelles islands.

Officials reported that the ship is carrying 26 crew members — 24 Indians and two Burmese. The Al Khaliq is the fourth ship Somali pirates have hijacked this month, and the third in the past week.

“The MV Al Khaliq, a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, has been hijacked early this morning off Somalia,” said a spokeswoman for the NATO’s antipiracy mission in the UK. “There were 26 crew on board, 24 of whom are Indian and two Burmese.”

The mission confirmed that the ship had been hijacked. “Within the last hour, an EU NAVFOR maritime patrol aircraft has confirmed the hijack of MV Al Khaliq, [with] six pirates on board and two attack skiffs in tow,” it said. “The mother skiff [of the pirates] has already been taken on board with a crane.”

The European Union’s anti-piracy mission reported that crew members radioed for help before losing contact. An EU aircraft that flew over the scene reported seeing six pirates on board and the Al Khaliq towing two pirate skiffs. NATO’s nearest defence ship was located about eight hours away from the Al Khaliq when it was overtaken by the pirates.

The EU and NATO also said that pirates released open fire on another ship, the Italian-flagged MV Jolly Rosso, off the coast of Kenya on the same day. That ship, however, managed to escape by increasing its throttles to eighteen knots, a spokeswoman for the antipiracy mission said.

“The ship took appropriate evasive action, managed to evade the attack and is proceeding on her voyage. There were no casualties,” read a statement by the mission.

Somali pirates have hijacked dozens of ships over the last two years, taking in tens of millions of dollars in ransom money. The pirates are believed to be holding seven ships in all. A new report on the pirates suggests that current international strategies to stop the hijackings are not effective.

The report, put out by the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research, said the international naval patrols off Somalia’s coast are expensive, and that the pirates can evade the patrols or escape to shore. It also noted that efforts to combat piracy by strengthening Somalia’s Western-backed government are limited, because the pirates come from specific regions and clans, far away from the capital.

The researchers, however, said that there are centers of power close to the pirate bases, and that these can be allies in fighting piracy. The researchers say that to effectively combat piracy, the international community needs to support these local structures.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Del Rosario to visit China amid South China Sea territorial dispute

  • Posted on January 29, 2019 at 2:24 am

Sunday, July 3, 2011

Philippines Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario is scheduled to visit China from July 7 to 9, raising hopes that a territorial dispute between the two countries may be resolved.

A six-nation dispute has escalated in the sea concerning territorial claims to several islands including the Spratly Islands. The area is thought to be rich in natural gas and oil. Both the Philippines and China wish to have a peaceful resolution to this conflict. “I’ve been invited to Beijing and we’re looking for peaceful means to settle the challenges facing us,” said Del Rosario.

The news comes after the United States and the Philippines began a series of naval exercises last week in the South China Sea, scheduled to last for 11 days. A Philippine military commander stated that the drills are part of an annual series of activities taking place under a defense agreement between the two countries and have nothing to do with the territorial dispute.

The Philippines maintains a close relation with the U.S. as a former territory of the nation.

The drills come at a time when several competing disputes in the South China Sea have begun to intensify. “Since February 25th, we actually have noted as many as nine intrusions of different varieties, but clearly becoming more aggressive and more frequent,” said Del Rosario. Several countries in Asia, including China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan, have territorial claims in the area spanning the Spratly and Paracel Islands. The region may be rich in oil and gas reserves. The US and Philippines have urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to address the conflict.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has argued that the United States would remain neutral regarding the disputes. She has also said that the United States has a “national interest” in freedom of navigation, respect for international law, and unimpeded, lawful commerce in the South China Sea.” Both countries are bound by a 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.

On June 27, the US Senate unanimously passed a motion condemning “the use of force by naval and maritime security vessels from China in the South China Sea.” China, on the other hand, has stated that it will not use force to resolve disputes in the South China Sea.

A Business Plan for an Apartment Locator Agency Needs To Focus On the Business Model

by

Adams Brad

Globalization has ensured that people are continuously on the move. A job may require shifting base to a new location or even perhaps a new country. People new to a town, city, or country will invariably seek the service of someone to find themselves a comfortable shelter. The idea of starting an apartment locator business is immensely exciting and a good business plan company will make sure your business plan is well written to satisfy the following queries:

What Is the Idea behind Your Business and Its Nature?

First, your business plan should explain in detail the basic idea behind your decision to start the particular business. Why do you think it is prudent to start such a business and how well is it expected to do in the marketplace. A major decision that needs acute focus is the nature of your business. Is it going to be bricks and mortar (an offline presence), a click (online presence,) or both a bricks and mortar and clicks business model.

Factors to Be Taken Into Consideration for a Bricks and Mortar Business

1)Budget- If you wish to establish a bricks and mortar model, you should be aware of the fact that it will require heavy initial investment. The rent or market value of the land (depending upon the location), cost of construction, infrastructure, staffing are some key factors that need meticulous attention since they require a large budget.

2)Revenue- Before proceeding ahead with a brick business model, important financial details should be in place. What will be your profit margin, expected footfalls, and time it will take you to break even would need careful detailing.

Factors to Be Taken Into Consideration for a Clicks Business

People these days are perennially short of time. In such a circumstance a clicks business model makes sense since it will be convenient for the potential customers to look for a convenient accommodation from the comfort of their homes. Also, people who are on the verge of moving to a new location may not have the time or inclination to personally visit an apartment locator agency.

Some key factors that must be considered before opting for a click model are:

Website development- Your website is your source of your bread and butter. A slipshod attempt here means that your business is doomed to fail. Before you develop a website some very key factors need specific detailing. These are:

1.Ease and convenience of navigating through your website

2.Careful attention should be paid to your competitor s website; what is their strength and weakness. How is your website going to surpass their strength and overcome the competitor s weakness?

Source of revenue- where do you expect to generate revenue from ? Are you going to charge commission or generate revenues from the ads on your website or will it be a combination of both? In case of opting for commission it should be decided in advance whether you are going to charge it from renters or the property owners or both of them

Other Factors

What will be your marketing strategy for both renters and property owners? How are you going to target them? Also, how will you ensure that your website is attractive? It is imperative that it carries the exact pictures of the properties that are in the market for the purpose of being leased.

Service Differentiation

In a crowded market you must take steps to ensure that your service stands out. The most important factor here is \’trust.\’ Be honest and reasonable with your clients. The picture of the properties and the rent associated with it should be in line with what is advertised on your website. Always remember that a happy customer means more business and profitability.

Tornado kills 19 in Florida

  • Posted on January 29, 2019 at 2:12 am

Saturday, February 3, 2007

At least 19 people have been killed in central Florida in the city of Lady Lake and Paisley after severe storms and a tornado ripped through the cities in the middle of the night. Eleven of those killed were in Paisley and three were in Lady Lake.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue crews resume tomorrow morning.

Volusia, Sumter, Lake and Seminole counties have all been declared a state of an emergency as dozens of houses, mobile homes and a church were destroyed. Clothes and furniture are scattered around the wrecked houses and pieces of trees are scattered about. Cars are reported to have been turned over or thrown around in the air.

“Our priority today is search and rescue,” said Gov. of Florida, Charlie Crist. Rescuers are still looking through the wreckage to find survivors of those who might have been killed.

A spokeman for the emergency response team of Lake county, Chris Patton calls the damage “devastating” and worse than “hurricanes in 2004.”

“We have complete devastation of homes, of businesses, religious institutions. It was unlike even perhaps the hurricanes of 2004 when we had minor roof damage, screen damage, pool damage. This is way far more devastating,” said Patton.

The storms hit at about 3:15 [EST] a.m. on Friday morning. At least 20,000-30,000 people are without power.

Teenage gunman kills 15 in south-west Germany

  • Posted on January 23, 2019 at 2:46 am

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

A 17 year old gunman has killed 15 in the towns of Winnenden and Wendlingen, near Stuttgart in southwest Germany, before being killed himself in a shootout with police.

Dressed in what has been described as black combat gear, the gunman entered Albertville school at 9.30am on March 11 2009 and, beginning with a particular classroom, started shooting at pupils and staff wandering through various 9th and 10th grade classrooms, reloading his handgun a number of times as he did so in a two minute shooting spree.

Reportedly aiming at the heads of his victims the gunman, identified as former pupil Tim Kretschmer, initially killed nine pupils, all except one being female, and three female teachers, one of whom was still a trainee who started only 4 weeks earlier. A further seven female students were injured. There are conflicting reports if a tenth student died from injuries later. Other students were injured as they attempted to escape by jumping out of windows.

Police received a call within three minutes at 9:33 a.m. the police entered the school at 9:40 a.m. to discover the bodies of the slain victims. A pupil managed to call for help using a mobile phone, and the headmaster apparently gave an early warning via the intercom so that some of the teachers were able to lock the doors to their classrooms from the inside, probably preventing more killings. From the first floor of the school, Kretschmer fired at the first police who arrived on the scene.

Kretschmer fled the school as further police arrived, and killed a gardener in a nearby clinic as he did so.

As the police evacuated the 1,000 pupil secondary school, Kretschmer, hijacked a Volkswagen Sharan and forced the driver to drive him south. Slowed by a traffic jam Kretschmer forced the driver to drive towards Wendlingen.

A police checkpoint was not able to apprehend Kretschmer. The car went off the road, and the gunman fled into an industrial area in Wendlingen about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the school.

Tracked by specialist armed police and police spotters in helicopters Kretschmer was finally cornered in the carpark of a car dealership in Wendlingen. Kretschmer, the son of a well known local farmer and businessman, made a last stand and killed a salesman and a customer before being shot by police marksmen being injured in the leg. At first it was unclear if the shooting killed him or if he was wounded and then shot himself. Police now believe that the evidence points to suicide.

During the manhunt, police stormed the youth’s home in Leutenbach to conduct a search. Kretschmer’s father, a hobbyist hunter, legally owned 15 firearms and one was missing from the collection. The majority of the firearms were kept securely locked as German law mandates, however a handgun was kept in the parent’s bedroom and it is this weapon that is presumed to have been used. Also, all the ammunition was not locked away, and Kretschmer reportedly carried a “3-digit figure” of ammunition with him.

The police are still uncertain about the motive, as Kretschmer was known as a calm, inconspicuous person to the people who knew him personally. He didn’t have a criminal record and has apparently not made any announcements of his killing spree, neither online nor to any of his friends.

Kretschmer had been a graduate of Albertville school the previous year.

Two police officers remain in serious condition.

Quake strikes near Anchorage, Alaska; no injuries reported

  • Posted on January 23, 2019 at 2:36 am

Monday, January 25, 2016

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Alaska, United States, near the state’s most populous city of Anchorage. City authorities say they do not know of any injuries caused by the earthquake, which occurred early yesterday morning.

The earthquake’s epicentre was 162 miles (about 260 km) away from Anchorage, where residents reported feeling intense shaking. Associated Press reporter Mark Thiessen said he was woken from sleep by the quake, despite having taken sleeping pills earlier.

In the city of Kenai, gas explosions destroyed two homes. The quake destroyed four homes in total; the two other homes were damaged by fire, but did not explode. Authorities said around twenty people took shelter in a local armoury opened up for those whose homes were evacuated.

In Anchorage, utility companies reported small-scale power outages.

The quake was followed by two smaller quakes. Its focus was around 50 miles (80 km) underground, which, according to the National Weather Service, meant that the quake struck too deep to cause a tsunami.
